Junior Resident Doctor at the Korle-Bu Traching Hospital, Dr. Ruth Sam, has disclosed that not all sexually transmitted infections are treatable.
Speaking to Mercy Bee the ‘Ekumfi Princess’ on e.tv Ghana’s ‘Girl Vibes Show’, she revealed, “Unfortunately not all STI’s are curable. HIV for instance has no cure but it’s manageable. Affected people are usually put-on long-term medications and antiretroviral drugs.”
She further stated that these drugs do not cure the infection, but rather will decrease the viral load to a very low level which helps people to still live the best of their lives.
“But when it comes to others like gonorrhea and syphilis, there are antibiotics that can be given to get rid of the infection but not all of them are curable,” she added.
According to her, most of the viral STIs are difficult to cure “and you just have to hope that by living a healthy lifestyle and practicing certain measures, they don’t progress to the worst.”
