A former Deputy Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) USA branch, Ali Suraj, has advised critics of the immediate past National Chairman, Freddie Blay of the party to desist from bashing him for carrying out his duties as a lawyer.
According to him, the law does not limit a lawyer on the kinds of clients s/he should defend, arguing maybe, a lawyer may only not be allowed to defend their spouse as it may constitute conflict of interest. The immediate past national chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Freddie Blay has reacted to public discussions on his law firm’s representation of alleged illegal miners in court.
On Tuesday in court, Lucy Ekeleba Blay, a private legal practitioner, told the court that she was holding brief for Freddy Blay in the case of the four foreigners charged as accomplices of Aisha Huang, who has been charged with the others for engaging in illegal mining activities in Ghana.
The NPP which Freddie Blay is a leading member of has actively taken a definitive stance against illegal mining. The party is judiciously fighting against the menace in hopes of curbing it and safeguarding the environment.
Reacting to the development in an interview with Happy98.9FM’s Don Kwabena Prah on the ‘Epa Hoa Daben’ political show, he said, “Freddie Blay is a lawyer and he works in a chamber. So, if the chamber has accepted the case, then who is Freddie Blay to say no to it?”
Ali Suraj however believes the former National Chairman of the party should have undertaken a due diligence assessment before taking on the case.
