Andrew Tetteh, IT business partner at GB Foods Africa, has questioned the importance of making the study of local languages in schools a priority.
In a live studio discussion with Nana Yaw Odame on the Men’s Lounge show on e.TV Ghana, he opined that the educational system and human capital development system in Ghana need to be second checked.
“I heard a lot of discussions on radio about a month ago concerning the lack of Twi teachers and Ga teachers in schools and I ask myself what the effect will be if my child cannot speak Twi or Ga today. In other places, we have students doing machine learning, artificial intelligence and robotics at very tender ages.
In some parts of Africa, we are thinking of trying to get Twi teachers and Ga teachers. I’m not saying that’s bad. It’s good to keep our culture but looking at the trends, is that priority? If you tell me you’re looking for French or Spanish teachers, I know that’s something big and extra but if you say you’re looking for Twi teachers, that’s questionable”, he said.
Andrew advised that we need to look at the general trends and look at how the world is advancing and follow because there is no way anyone is going to come to the decision that even though the world is advancing, we will still stick to old ways or we will go back to our old ways.
