Chief Director for the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, Dr. Evans Aggrey Darko has said that the undecided parliamentary majority, days after the election, is a sign that Ghanaians want both parties to work together for the development of the state.
Speaking in an interview with Happy FM’s Raymond Nyamador on the Happy Morning Show he stated: ” Just as the president said, I think Ghanaians have sent a strong signal that parliament and the executive have to work together to enhance the development of the state. In fact the president calls it a divided government or a separated government”.
According to him, even though the New Patriotic Party will be in the Executive, it is important that that it factors the need for negotiations, now that that it is likely that both parties could have the same number of parliamentarians in the house.
“The NPP has won the executive but they will have to embrace a lot of negotiations .Of course, if we know where the majority of the parliament is then it will have implication on the constitution of the committees and where the speaker has to go”, he added.
President Nana Akufo-Addo in his victory speech after the election expressed a similar sentiment when he said: “Ghanaians have said loud and clear that the NPP and NDC must work together for our collective good. Now is the time for all of us, irrespective of our political affiliations, to work hard and place Ghana where we want it”.
As it stands the NPP has 137 seats in parliament while the NDC has 136 seats. There is also one independent seat. Meanwhile Ghana awaits the parliamentary results of the Sene West constituency which is likely to determine which party secures majority in parliament.
