Sports Journalist and Lecturer, Dr. Godfred Akoto Boafo, has described the timing of the 2022 Qatar World Cup as one of the worst in the history of Ghana football.
According to him, the Black Stars is now at the rebuilding stage.
“Unfortunately the World Cup has come at a time where we are now trying to build the national team. We were eliminated at the AFCON at the group stages. We have played very few matches together as a team, and administratively there is nothing we can do. We have simply not been helped by the timing as we have not had enough time to prepare for the World Cup,” he told Ohene Brenya Bampoe in the Happy Sports Dialogues.
He believes if the national team had been together together for a couple of years, then no one would have questioned the readiness of the team for the World Cup.
Dr. Akoto Boafo posits most of the players in the Black Stars squad have never played major tournaments in the true sense. He disclosed only five (5) out of the twenty-six (26) players posses tournament experience.
Looking at the national team, one will describe it as sort of inexperienced “and that’s the issue at hand. Most of the key components of the team are young and the timing is not favorable to us,” he reiterated.
