Ghanaian rap artiste, Yung Pabi, has opined that the current rap industry in Ghana is not as hardcore as it used to be.
During a discussion with host, Foster Romanus on the Late Nite Celebrity Show on eTV Ghana, he was asked if it should be a worry, the fact that Ghanaian rappers are now doing more of commercial songs because proper rap music with good content seems to die fast.
He replied that, “I don’t think it’s dying out. It’s about how you rap and what you rap about. We are losing our rappers but I don’t blame the rappers, I blame the consumers. I blame the people listening to the music.
I blame them because I think the listeners in general want to move their body and because we don’t have people who appreciate some kind of art or the way that people are doing this music thing, it affects the income”.
Yung Pabi explained that due to this, artistes are forced to switch their style of music and adapt to doing what pleases the public because they also want to generate income for themselves and not do their music in vain.
“When the artiste notices that a lot of people are singing and the public is loving it, they are forced to switch to singing and this is the reason why sometimes when we go on stage to perform, most of the artistes cannot do live performances. It’s because what he’s doing is not actually him.
It’s a lot of auto-tune and other effects put together so that they sound like they can sing so I don’t think rap is dying, I feel like we are looking for ways to put the rap. The beats we are using now and the stuff we put together to make people enjoy the rap, that is why rap of nowadays is not as hardcore as at first”, the rapper further indicated.
