The Electoral Commission (EC) has said that the fire that guttered the Greater Accra Regional office of the EC did not affect the Main Administration Block of the office. Personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service were able to bring the fire under control.
The office located at Sapeiman reportedly caught fire in the early hours of Friday. No casualty has been recorded.
According to the EC in a statement, the fire struck the storage facility of the Sarpeiman Office and destroyed a number of used items including old forms, ballot boxes and referendum stationery but did not affect the commission data.
The Commission, therefore, entreats “the General Public to ignore the falsehood being peddled on social media to the effect that its Data Centre was destroyed by the fire. The Electoral Commission assures the General Public that its Data Centre is safe and secure.”
Ghana goes to the polls on December 7 to elect a President and Parliamentarians.
