The Ghana Journalism Association (GJA) has disclosed that several of its members have received threats following the coverage of the just ended December 7 polls.
According to the President of the association, some political actors and politicians of opposition parties have accused these media personalities of having being biased during the election coverage, hence, threatening them.
On his account, these threats mostly arise from the publication of results by the media during the collation of results from the just ended December 7 polls.
GJA President, Roland Affail Monney speaking in an interview with Samuel Eshun on the Happy Morning Show aired on e.TV said;
“I am suprised the media is now under threat post elections. The media did not collate the results for the election, they only declared. Why are some of our people under serious threats after the election results were declared? I don’t want to bring back pain but Ahmed Suale’s death started with threats”.
Affail Monney indicated that Journalists simply projected the possible election results and did not call the election. “Some of the media houses even had their projections wrong so why should they now be threatened over the election coverage?” he asked.
The GJA President appealed to the Inspector General of Police and the National Security Minister to particularly focus on protecting members of the media fraternity at this time. “That’s the only way the media can work well”.
He praised the media for its overall performance during the election 2020 coverage and also advised media practitioners in the country to be extra careful in their pronouncements and remain objective.
“The media did its work well so they should stop threatening us. These threats should not be treated lightly”, he reiterated.
