The Editor of the Ghanaian Publisher, Yaw Obeng Manu says the elections of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in regional capitals such as Accra and Kumasi can lessen the burden on the President in his appointment of these persons.
Yaw believes that the recent delay in the appointment of MMDCEs has highlighted the need for government to embark on alternative processes such as elections to select MMDCEs.
Speaking to Samuel Eshun on the Happy Morning Show, he expressed: “We need to start embarking on processes that will reduce the stress involved in appointing MMDCEs. Of course, elections cannot be held for the selection of every MMDCE but for the regional capitals, let’s make a decision that all regional capitals will have elections as it happens in most countries such as London where the Mayor is elected and in other prominent areas., others are also elected”.
He shared that already the delay in the appointments has placed current MMDCEs in an unhealthy environment where “they were left in uncertainty of whether they were leaving or staying and because of that they could not make any serious decision”.
President Akufo-Addo has released names of nominees of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Executives (MMDCEs) to work in his second term.
This was announced by the Minister for Local Government, Dan Botwe at a press briefing on Sunday, September 19, 2021.He added that the list has been forwarded to the various regional ministers.
