Medical Practitioner and former Deputy Minister of Health, Dr Okoe-Boye has said that the youth can secure jobs for themselves if they have the desire to be “engaged” in any form of work.
According to him, there is so much opportunity for the youth to take advantage of in securing a job.
Exemplifying his point, he shared with Rev. Erskine on the Y Leaderboard Series: “Once a lady who was in search for a nursing job approached me and I advised her to go to three or four hospitals and say she wants to work without a salary. Within a month, she was absorbed in one of the hospitals.
No decent person will see you contribute to their organization without giving you a salary or stipend. You just need to be engaged”.
Dr Oko-Boye related his own experience of how he exerted himself in a position of a janitor even though he had applied to sell drugs at a pharmacy.
“I was in charge of cleaning the pharmacy more or less not a house help but a shop help. That is not what I applied for but I don’t belittle any job. Any kind of job that you want me to do I will do it, of course, if it is decent.
I was paid money that you could spend on yourself. My excitement was not in the money but the fact that I was engaged”.
Sharing how his hard work paid off, Dr Oko-Boye stated: “I worked with them and they were so happy with me that when I got my admission to the university they even supported me”.
