The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Bosiako popularly known as Chairman Wontumi who made history by leading the region as chair for two consecutive terms is seeking a third term bid.
A stiff opposition has however risen over Chairman Wontumi’s desire to be Ashanti Regional Chair for a third term. The recent opposition comes from the former Obuasi East Member of Parliament (MP), Edward Enin who says he will lead the campaign against Chairman Wontumi’s ambitions.
He described Wontumi as an opportunist who rode on the backs of others to get his position and dumped them. “Wontumi uses and cuts you off after you help him and I know this because I suffered the same fate. I helped him win the chairmanship for the first time but I will campaign against Wontumi this time around. I will make sure he losses the seat the same way I helped him gain it.”
Particularly not concerned about who will replace Wontumi as Ashanti Regional Chair, Edward Enin reiterated, “I am leading the campaign against Wontumi. We should vote against him big time. I really don’t care who will replace him, booting him out of power is my priority because he has done the party a disservice in the region.”
Edward Enin who claims to have known Wontumi before his rise to fame described him (Wontumi) as a braggart and show off. “We don’t need a leader who will show off his political wealth. He is nothing but a braggart who had nothing to his name prior to the NPP winning power in 2016,” he told Happy98.9FM’s Don Kwabena Prah on the Epa Hoa Daben political talk show.
Preparation for the 2024 general election by the NPP is currently underway. Although the party has not officially opened nominations for their various portfolios, some notable people are already lobbying for votes to secure party executive seats.
In the Ashanti Region, the NPP’s stronghold, for example, the incumbent chairman, Bernard Antwi Bosiako (Chairman Wontumi), Mr. Owusu Aduomi, former Member of Parliament for Ejisu constituency in the Ashanti region and former Deputy Minister of Roads, Odeneho Kwaku Appiah Constituency Chairman, Afigya Kwabre South, Mr. Boris B, among others are lacing their boots to lead the NPP in the Ashanti region as regional chairpersons to recapture power in election 2024.
