Senior Resident doctor at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr. Nelly Adade, has revealed that women are at a higher risk of being infected with sexually transmitted infections.
She explained sexually transmitted infections as infections one gets from having a sexual encounter with someone.
“Normally, these infections can got through other means but the main means by which you get it is through sexual interactions. Some examples are virginal sex, oral sex, anal sex and each of these infections have a unique and different way of presenting itself as they don’t have a single umbrella of symptoms for them,” she said.
According to her, every period is at risk of being infected with STIs depending on the kind of partner one has.
In an exclusive interview with Mercy Bee the ‘Ekumfi Princess’ on e.tv Ghana’s Girl Vibes, she said, “for instance, if your partner is promiscuous or is living a risky life, you’re at risk of suffering an STI. You may be sitting down quietly in your corner but your partner is all over and if gets it you’ll get it too.”
She noted that there are however different schools of thought with the most common one being women are more likely to suffer STIs because they are at the receiving end.
“Looking at the way our genitals are, we are more at the receiving end so we are more likely to be infected as compared to the men,” she emphasized.
She advised ladies to take very good care of themselves and take the necessary precautions in order to prevent themselves from getting infected.
