Licensed counselling psychologist and a member of the Ghana Psychological Association, Dr. John Sedofia, has posited that there is no link whatsoever between mental illness and violence or abuse.
This revelation came up during a discussion on eTV Ghana’s Men’s Lounge with host, Nana Yaw Odame on the topic ‘Why abusive men act the way they do’.
He explained that there is no specific definition for an abusive man; however, abuse can be characterized or identified as any act that inflicts pain, be it physical or emotional on another person, especially their spouses.
“Some people believe that there is a link between the mental state of a person and the abuse they engage in. The Harvard Medical School conducted a research and found that there is absolutely no link between mental illness and violence or abuse for that matter.
They say that the general thinking that men who are abusive may have had some mental difficulties is not true according to the Harvard Medical School”.
Dr. Sedofia drew his conclusion that we cannot say for sure every time that anyone who abuses another person is suffering from a certain mental illness. He noted however, that research on this topic is still inconclusive.
He rather pointed that some of the reasons why men get abusive is to prove their masculinity and in some cases, it also has to do with their excessive temperament.
“They want to prove that they’re strong and they want to prove that they’re not people you can toy around with but my fellow men, know that real men don’t abuse”, Dr. John Sedofia advised.
