Ambassador Edward Boateng, the Director General of the State Interest and Governance Authority (SIGA) has challenged CEOs of state institutions to be what he described as the economic super highway for Ghana’s development.
In an exclusive interview on e.tv Ghana’s Fact Sheet socio-political talk show with Samuel Eshun, he mentioned the importance of state entities in promoting entrepreneurship and economic development in Ghana.
He believes that should state institutions fulfill their various mandate and achieve some level of success, it will not only be the economic super highway for the development of entrepreneurship but also a major boost for the private sector and improve employment rate in Ghana.
“We need state entities to provide the infrastructure and resources necessary to stimulate entrepreneurship and private sector development. For example, when I was in South Africa setting up my business, I didn’t have to worry about setting up a mast or a studio because those things were already provided by the State. In the US, the Federal government provided infrastructure for CNN to operate. If we can do the same in Ghana, it will be easier for the private sector to flourish, create jobs and grow our economy.”
Ambassador Boateng also acknowledged that state entities have not always been effective in promoting entrepreneurship and development, but he believes SIGA is making progress in improving its effectiveness.
He noted that SIGA is working to provide greater clarity in terms of the mandates of state entities and to ensure that they are able to promote economic growth effectively.
“Previously, the primary responsibility of state entities was to provide jobs, but we have to go beyond that now,” Ambassador Boateng added. “We need state entities to support entrepreneurship and provide the infrastructure necessary to create jobs and promote growth.”
With SIGA’s continued efforts to improve governance and transparency in Ghana’s state entities, there is hope that they will be able to play a vital role in stimulating entrepreneurship and promote economic growth in the country.
