COVID-19 Ambassadors deployed by the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana to various polling stations during the Special Voting exercise today, have been extolled for their effectiveness.
According to reports from Happy 98.9 FM’s correspondents across the country, the COVID-19 Ambassadors ensured all safety protocols were adhered to the latter during the Special Voting exercise.
Kadri Wahab reporting from the Adenta Constituency, noted some Police officers in some of the areas he visited were turned away from the polling centre for not wearing nose masks. “They were asked to go back and wear their nose masks before they were allowed to cast their votes. In some areas, these COVID-19 Ambassadors also carried extra masks and gave them out to anyone who came without one”.
Kadri added that aside ensuring safe distancing, these ambassadors also made sure voters had unlimited water supply to wash their hands.
Happy 98.9 FM’s Mac Paradise Okocha who visited various polling centers in the Ablekuma North constituency also applauded the EC for setting up the COVID-19 Ambassadors team.
“The team made sure all COVID-19 protocols were observed and calm was maintained at all the polling centers. They did really well”.
Sharing his experience at one of the polling centers, he motioned that the camera crew he went with was even denied access to the polling station when they did not wash their hands at the veronica bucket sighted at the entrance of the polling station.
The Electoral Commission (EC) prior to the voter exhibition exercise announced that among the 73,107 officers trained and recruited for the exercise, there were COVID-19 ambassadors tasked to ensure protocols are observed at all centres.
The Commission made known that the mandate of these ambassadors will extend to the December 7 polls, where they will be stationed across all polling stations.
“The commission is desirous of ensuring the safety of its stakeholders. As a result, we have recruited COVID-19 ambassadors and they have been tasked to enforce COVID-19 safety protocols put in place by the Commission”, Madam Jean Mensa made known at the ‘Let the Citizen Know’ session hosted by the EC.
