Chairperson for the Ghana Toll Workers, Henry Dogbe, has called on government to reintroduce the collection of tolls across the country.
According to him, the toll booths were a profitable business venture which brought in a lot of revenue for the country and a source of employment.
He decried the harsh conditions toll workers now face as they are yet to be reinstituted into the workforce.
He revealed that since the closure of toll booths in the country, its members are stranded and displaced because “they are physically challenged and cannot fend for themselves and family.”
In an interview with Sefah-Danquah on the Happy Morning Show, Mr. Dogbe appealed to the government to consider their request and reinstitute road tolls. He said, “The decision to cease collection of road tolls and the termination of our employment has made our living worse.”
He lamented that the delay in payment of their salaries for months has put them in dire financial stress.
He maintained that “there is the need to reintroduce the toll booths because the profit is more than the expenditure of the country.”
The Ministry of roads and highways directed the discontinuation of the collection of tolls on all public roads and bridges across the country which took effect on Thursday November 18,2021 at 12:00am following the announcement by the Finance Ministry of the scrapping of tolls on all public roads during a presentation on the 2022 budget.
