Board Member of the National Folklore Board, Philip Boakye Dua Oyinka, has applauded the young crop of Ghanaian musicians for taking a keen interest in the preservation of highlife.
With change creeping into the Ghanaian music scene, highlife has been affected, taking different forms, “I believe it might be unconscious but we are taking highlife seriously. A new crop of musicians are coming who are taking highlife up for what it really should be.”
He disclosed the new crop of guitarists have gone through the hands of Agya Koo Nimo and some notable highlife names. Dua Oyinka mentioned the Kwan Pa band and the Legon Palm wine band as some of the many artistes promoting highlife.
“These are young men below 34 years and the work they are doing is great,” he told Samuel Eshun on a special Cultural conversation dubbed; “Promoting Ghana’s Culture Beyond Borders.”
The poet charged the media to give prominence to cultural displays at events. He also called on stakeholders and practitioners alike to be committed to their craft “and if you respect your craft, your craft will respect you as well.”
