Dr. John Sedofia, a Licensed Counselling Psychologist and Member of the Ghana Psychological Association, has shared some traits that one can observe in a man to know whether or not he is abusive.
During an interview with Nana Yaw Odame on eTV Ghana’s Men’s Lounge show, he mentioned that some men are abusive simply because they enjoy it, however, others do not even realize when they are being abusive.
Further listing these traits, he started, “One of these traits is that they try to control. They make you feel very useless and they like to command. Another trait is that they try to blame others, especially their partners, for their shortcomings and mistakes.
They also treat other people with disrespect and they are overly jealous so if you are their partner and you stay out late, they begin to call you, find out where you are and what you were doing. When you return, they take you to the questioning room and ask you all sorts of questions”.
According to the doctor, anger can be a reason why a man would get abusive, however, anger is a normal trait in every human, thus, it is the intensity of the anger and the reaction.
Dr. Sedofia, in reference to this, warned that as humans, people may once or twice exhibit some of these traits but that does not necessarily mean they are abusive, hence, these traits must be observed over a period of time before conclusions can be drawn.
