In most relationships today, couples are most likely to cohabit before marriage for reasons best known to them.
Lawyer Leslie Fiadoyor has given out some reasons why he believes most couples decide to stay together before marriage.
Defining what cohabitation really is he mentioned that, “It is an act where a couple agrees to live together voluntarily without the law or religion recognizing them as husband and wife”.
Talking to Nana Yaw Odame on e.TV Ghana’s Men’s Lounge he said, “I believe some people don’t want to place definitions on things they do, they want to avoid the whole tag associated with certain activities. So they meet each other and are in love and they just decide to move in with each other forgetting about the whole institution called marriage”.
According to him, most of these couples believe that they still will get the same benefits from staying together like they were married, “the only difference is the name and the legal consequences that come with it”.
He also mentioned that others also like to use cohabitation as a “Demo”. Where they get to know each other well enough before making the decision to get married.
“I don’t believe if you meet somebody, the very first instance you get to live with the person is when you’re married. No, you must get to know the person in the morning, afternoon and evening and cohabitation gives you that arrangement” he said.
Moving on he added that, love is also another reason why most couples will want to cohabit because, “If you have feelings for each other enough to sustain this arrangement then why not, why should you wait until the status of marriage is conferred on you when you can live together peacefully and happily”.
Leslie also revealed that in most cases, ladies are most likely to make the first move by packing in with their partners.
Even though some men also do the same, “there are rare cases of men moving in with their women before marriage it is mostly the ladies” he said.
