Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Alhaji Inusah Fuseini, has asserted that the Electoral Commission (EC) is being run as a private entity rather than the independent, transparent and neutral body it needs to be.
Speaking in an interview on the Happy Morning Show with Host Samuel Eshun, he stated that the actions of the Electoral Commission showed that it was in no way independent.
“The Electoral Commission is being run like a private enterprise. First of all, the way they speak. Bossman said National Democratic Congress (NDC) was a threat to the democracy of Ghana. If it was another country he would have been removed. This is because he has compromised neutrality. The character of Electoral Commission doesn’t allow for such statements. Jean Mensah has spoken in ways we have never expected and she speaks anyhow without regard for us. We are not surprised. When you have all the commissioners appointed by a sitting president going into elections, then the perception is that the appointed commissioners will act per the bidding of the EC”, he said.
Commenting on the response from the EC to the minority leader, Inusah Fuseini expressed his disappointment in the manner the EC handled its response.
“I don’t know why they [EC] have decided to respond to the Minority leader in that way. The press conference was not on EC.The press conference was on the fight of the spread of the disease. I don’t understand why they responded in that manner. They don’t derive powers on their own. It is not a private organization. It is a public organization. All of us has a right to accountability irrespective of the EC being an independent organization. They are not a law to themselves. Their character requires them to be independent, transparent and neutral. Public institutions are not set up to be confrontational because they serve the public. If you don’t have the patience to work in the public sector, you better advise yourself”, he said.
The Electoral Commission (EC) has dismissed claims by Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu that government has given the Commission some Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs).
Speaking at a Minority press conference on Thursday, the Tamale South MP, among other claims, chided government for supplying PPEs to EC officials while health workers lacked same.
