American born-Nigerian Afrobeats musician and songwriter, David Adedeji Adeleke, globally known as Davido has noted that Canadian rapper Drake deserves his flowers for giving Afrobeats a wider reach on the global music scale.
Davido reminiscing on the growth of Afrobeats said, “5 years ago, when you talk about Africa, Afrobeats does not join the conversation but now, when you talk about Africa, people go like I love Afrobeats.”
He stated further in an interview on American entertainment segment, the ‘Bootleg Kev Podcast’ that the African-based genre became a global household name before Drake hopped on to it but noted that it got bigger especially around the U.S when the ‘One Dance’ hitmaker joined the Afrobeats train. “Afrobeats was already huge before Drake hit on it; But Drake is Drake!; I’d be lying if I say he didn’t put some spotlight on Afrobeats and he’s made some dope records with that.”
Songs like ‘Fountains’ and ‘Madiba Riddim’ are songs that contain massive essence of Afrobeats made by the five time Grammy award winner.
