Street naming comes as relief to utility providers
Service providers in some parts of Accra are beginning to reap the benefits of well-structured residential address systems.
In the Kokomlemle suburb of Accra, service providers find it easier to reach their target clients than they previously did without the new address systems.
Kokomlemle is just one of few places on pilot for the street naming and address systems set up.
The implementation of the national policy on street naming and property address system was approved by parliament in November 2011.
The system had been on the drawing board for some time now, as the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD), which is the co-ordinating ministry for the project, undertook some preparatory work.
The system allows for smooth transaction of businesses since it reduces the time needed to track customers.
In communities where the address systems are well structured, banks and other financial institutions offer credit of all form without demanding collateral.
The Ghana Water Urban Water Limited is one of many service providers delighted about the transformation in Kokomlemle.
Communications Manager of the Ghana Urban Water Limited, Mr Stanley Martey in an interview with e.tv Ghana news attested to the fact the street naming system was very important in their operations since it helps them locate places in time in order to save a situation.
“For instance when there is a serious burst and someone calls and he or she is unable to give us the right location, it becomes very difficult for us to locate the place and have it repaired. So it means that good quality treated water will be gushing out for a very long time before we are able to locate the place,” he added.
Residents at Kokomlemle are, in no doubt happy about the fact that public utility services can be easily delivered.
The new street names and house numbering has indeed made life easier. But people are still not in-tune with its workings due to years without it.
