AMA determined to relocate Agbogbloshie market
City Authorities in the Accra Metropolitan Assembly are determined to develop the Agbogbloshie market area into a resort to serve as a potential tourism destination.
The World Bank has already pumped funds into the Korle Lagoon ecological restoration project which has been heavily polluted.
However, traders at the Agbogbloshie market are adamant to move since they claim the market is their only source of livelihood. The reluctant attitude of the traders is likely to stall the project.
That notwithstanding, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) says it is finalizing plans to move the Agbogbloshie market to Ajen Kotoku.
The Agbogbloshie market which is often referred to as a digital dumping ground records millions of tons of e-waste being processed each year.
The prevailing congestion and environmental conditions at the market presents a serious health threat to inhabitants. This has been a source of worry to city authorities.
The traders at the market have urged the Assembly to exercise restraint and make conditions there better for them.
An assembly member of the area Kabiru Nii Armah, has also pleaded with the AMA to engage opinion leaders on the issue.
