Ex-President Kufuor: We are not against public enquiry but...
Ex-president John Agyekum Kufuor has broken his silence on the on-going Woyome judgment debt payment scandal.
The NDC financier and businessman, Alfred Agbesi Woyome, claims he led construction firm, Watervile, to win a government contract to build stadia for the African Cup of Nations in 2008 which Ghana hosted.
The contract, according to him, was awarded to him by the Kufuor-led administration.
However, the NPP has bluntly come out to refute the claims by the NDC financier. The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has been tasked to investigate the matter which has led to the payment of GHS51 million to Mr Woyome.
That notwithstanding, the NPP is asking for an independent probe of the matter. Thus, a former Minister of Finance, Osafo Maafo has sought a court injunction to prevent him from appearing before EOCO.
Adding his voice to the calls being made by his NPP colleagues, ex-president Kufuor said, “I am not saying we are against public investigation enquiries. We are only saying that EOCO itself is part of the Attorney General’s office which is the first suspect in the payment and that is the principled position we are taking.”
The Woyome scandal has led to the dismissal of the Attorney General, Martin Amidu, who claims he has evidence to prove that some bigwigs in the ruling NDC party are behind the Woyome judgment debt payment.
