AMA razes down illegal structures despite resistance from squatters
Officials at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly(AMA) have razed down illegal structures behind the VIP bus terminal. The demolition follows Sunday’s fire outbreak at the squatter camp which property worth millions of Ghana cedis was lost.
The demolition exercise was met with fierce resistance from the squatters forcing police to open fire.
The demolition exercise which was done under heavy security turned violent when squatters set fire in the structures.
The act which was done ostensibly was to prevent the bulldozers from carrying out the destruction. The fire service personnel present at the scene had a tough time trying to control the fire.
When police men present at the scene failed to react, the squatters began to fire missiles at them. For more than fifteen minutes police and squatters traded bullets and stones.
The squatters expressed their anger at the exercise since according to them the ultimatum given to them by the city authorities was short. That notwithstanding, city officials say the exercise is in the interest of the squatters themselves.
