Woyome saga; AG files writ for extension
The government has for the first time admitted that judgment debt payment to business man Alfred Woyome may have been a mistake.
According to government, the NDC financier had no contract with the state for which he sued for unlawful abrogation.
Mr Woyome, has however, received $58 million over the last two years for alleged breach of contract by the one-time New Patriotic Party government during preparation towards the African Cup of Nations in 2008.
In a new twist to the controversial payment, the AG held that the NDC financier has no legitimate contract to seek for reparation.
The payment has raised serious controversy with politicians sharply divided on the plausibility or otherwise of it.
The Attorney General in court on Monday launched a legal contest against the payment and has therefore, filed a motion in to amend his earlier writ and claims against Woyome.
Quoting portions of the Constitution, the AG argued that any contract with an international company must receive approval from Parliament.
The AG’s challenge is premised on the fact that Parliament is not in the know of any such contract with Woyome and his company, particularly because it was an international financial agreement and parliament ought to have been informed.
The court has granted an extension of time to the AG to provide details of his challenge and has therefore, adjourned the case to February 14, 2012.
