No smuggling of Nigerian oil to Ghana

The recent removal of fuel subsidies in Nigeria is to generate enough revenue to for the government for developmental purposes. It intention is also to halt the suspected smuggling of that country’s petroleum products to neighboring countries, according to the Nigerian government.

e.tv Ghana news has been finding out if the new regulations set up by the Nigerian government affect Ghana in any way.

The key reason aside the Nigerian government’s intention to invest in local is to discourage the suspected smuggling of cheaper Nigerian petroleum products into neighboring countries such as Ghana, Togo and Benin.

The government estimates it will save 1 trillion naira about $6 billion this year alone by eliminating the subsidy. Unions, workers and middle class Nigerians are furious about the resultant price hikes.

In Ghana, the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) is refuting claims that some cheaper fuel was being imported into the country during the days of the subsidy.

Retailers of petroleum products in Ghana have also denied receiving smuggled petroleum products from anywhere.

Evidence on the ground suggest that subsidy on Nigerian fuel has no impact on prices in Ghana or encourages smuggling of the commodity into Ghana.
