Accident claims nine lives on New Year's eve

Nine people, including two children and a pregnant woman died on the spot in two separate accidents on the Sefwi-Bekwai and Sefwi-Wiawso road and the Jomoro area in the Western Region on New Year's eve.
In the first accident between Sefwi-Bekwai and Sefwi-Wiawso, seven passengers in a taxi, including five adults, a nine-year-old and an eight-month old baby lost their lives when the car collided with a fully loaded articulated truck.
The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Sefwi-Wiawso Government Hospital for autopsy. According to the police, the taxi with registration number AW 1007 Y loaded with the passengers was heading towards Sefwi-Bekwai, while the truck with registration number GN1329 -09 was returning from Sefwi-Bonsu-Nkwantah.
On reaching Appiahkrom, at about 6 p.m. the two vehicles were said to have collided resulting in the death of the seven passengers.
According to Deputy Superintendent of Police, Mr Joseph Apaloo, the driver of the articulated truck who was the only one who survived the accident was sent to the hospital for attention and would be helping the police in their investigations.
In the second accident, two people died instantly while several others sustained injuries when an Opel taxi collided with a Hyundai Grace mini-bus. The dead were identified as Charles Meniah, 42 and Augustine Adiamono, 45.
The Jomoro District Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Mr John Fergusson Dzineku, said the taxi with registration number WR1624-09 was returning to Jomoro while the mini-bus with the registration number WR454-09 was also moving out of the town.
He said the incident happened at about 4:30 am. Mr Dzineku said those who sustained injuries were rushed to the Ekwi St. Martin de Pores Hospital.
