20% increase in fuel prices effective today, December 29
The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has announced a 20 per cent increase in petroleum products. The increases have resulted in a 10 per cent increase in transportation fares.
The marginal increases were decided on by road transport operators after their deliberation with officials of the Ministry of Transport in Accra on Wednesday.
A press statement signed by representatives of transport operators in the country, that is, Messrs Stephen K Okudzeto, Amoabeng Peprah, Alhaji E. A. Tetteh and Alhaji Aliu Baba, said the increases were to take immediate effect from Thursday, December 29, 2011.
The increases are to cover intra city (trotro), inter-city (long distance) and taxi-cabs, including Peugeot caravan vehicles.
The statement said after careful consideration of the increases in petroleum products and other inputs in the running of transportation, the 10 per cent increase had been decided on.
The statement asked all transport organisations to post the new fares at their lorry parks and loading terminals to avoid any confrontation with clients, while asking for the cooperation of all for the successful implementation of the new fares.
The Minister of Road Transport, Mr Collins Douda, when contacted said the increases were insignificant and would not affect greatly the economic circumstance of Ghanaians.
For his part, the chairman of the GRTCC, Mr Mathew Hayford, also said that the increases were minimal and lower than the percentage increase of 18 per cent announced at the beginning of the year, that is, on January 4, 2011.
