Akyem-Saamang residents protest against mining in their community
Residents of Akyem-Saamang, a town near Osino in the Eastern Region continue to live in fear; weeks after a joint military/police team raided the town and brutalized them for demanding that a mining company working on a concession there stops operations due to the impact of its operations on the environment.
The act has rsulted in the closure of schools, shops and many other public centres. Residents, however, are still battling to come to terms with the brutality meted out to them by the security forces thought to have been hired by Solar mining, operators of the mining concession at Akyem-Saamang.
The town folks see better prospects in farming as against mining activities that are destroying their livelihoods. They are accusing the company of causing damage to their water bodies, crops and land.
But Solar Mining, a subsidiary of Kibi Mining insists on continuing with their mining activities and has therefore used various strategies to suppress the people.
About two weeks ago military men stormed the town and opened fire on the people. Many sustained serious degrees of injuries.
