Ghanaians show keen interest ahead of 2012 elections-Google
According to a report released by google on internet search activity by Ghanaians in 2011, Ghanaians were keen to find about their own country ahead of facebook, yahoo and other popular websites.
The report indicates that ahead of Ghana’s presidential and parliamentary elections next year, search interests among Ghanaians point to a very close contest between the two major political parties - the incumbent National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the opposition party the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Throughout the year, the number of searches for the NDC and NPP has been extremely close. In April search interest in the NPP during their parliamentary primaries peaked and in July a similar spike was experienced in searches for the NDC as they picked their presidential candidate.
The 10 fastest rising searches for 2011 also demonstrate Ghanaians’ continued love for the world’s most popular sport - football - with many people searching for information on the English Premier League, Real Madrid, and Barcelona teams as well as for the great player Lionel Messi.
Other popular search terms such as ‘HTC’ and ‘Trader’ underline that the future of the web is mobile, according to the Google report.
