UN University to organize E-waste Academy in Ghana
A team of experts from the United Nations University in Germany have arrived in Ghana to discuss with the City Waste Recycling Company Limited and stakeholders in Ghana the possibility of establishing an electronic waste academy in the country.
The objective of the project is to sensitize people on the proper disposal of electronic waste in the country.
The e-waste menace facing many developing countries such as Ghana can be attributed to the advancement in technology in most developed countries.
These countries have become the dumping site of most of these used electronic gadgets as mountains of western Electronic-waste continue to rise in Africa. The situation is worsened by stricter environmental regulations in developed nations imposed in the late 1980s.
Ghana and Nigeria have become new targets for dumping electronic waste and it is now assuming alarming proportions and as such the Agbogbloshie market settlement in Accra has become a favorite destination for the dumping of western electronic junk. The discarded gadgets end up in the hands of unprotected children who burn them to extract precious metal for sale.
Experts are worried that if the situation is not checked it could have devastating consequence in the country. Early lead exposure has been linked to vascular and kidney disease, hypertension, Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, and diabetes.
According to Vivian Ahiayibor of the City Waste Recycling Plant, early exposure of lead to children under 10 years can cause them to have a low level of intelligent quotient (IQ).
It is against this back drop that the United Nations University has been compelled to dispatch a team of experts to Ghana to educate Ghanaians on the problem.
The team visited City Waste Recycling Company limited a nongovernmental organization involved in the disposal of electronic waste.
The recycling plant also recycles parts of electronic gadgets and the unrecyclable parts are disposed off in a secured manner without any negative impact on human health and the environment.
