PURC worried over lack of communication between service providers

The Public Utilities and Regulatory Commission (PURC) has expressed worried over what it terms as the lack of communication and information flow between stakeholders in the utility sector.

The problem has been identified by the utility service regulator as a major setback in the quality of utility service delivery in Ghana.

The PURC has therefore tasked utility service providers to comply with a joint protocol for communication signed by the various stakeholders.

The various utility service providers who spoke to e.tv Ghana news all agreed that communication and public engagement has been poor and has therefore made plans for a paradigm shift in information dissemination in the coming year.

Two years ago, stakeholders in the utilities sector signed a joint protocol for communication. Under the protocol, service providers are to share information relating to outages or service disruption with selected stakeholders within ten minutes.

The Public Relations teams of the various providers are to engage the public through the media on the situation and how it is being resolved within 15 minutes. This is where some service providers have an issue. They are of the view that 10 to 15 minutes is too short a time for information to be sent across to all stakeholders. Rather attention should be on how to resolve which ever problem there is.

One other issue of concern for the PURC is the lack of assurance on the part of service providers to the public. The activities to celebrate Christmas are most likely to put more pressure on utilities. The PURC wants service providers to take the necessary contingency measures in the event of any problems.

The ECG and the Ghana Water Company are to reach by phone for complaints. Consumers are to call 0302-218240 or text to the short code 1700 for complaints to the Ghana Water company, while call to be ECG can be made to 0302-662712.
