BNI to probe missing cocaine within seven days
The Government of Ghana has given the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) a seven-day ultimatum to unravel the mystery surrounding the missing 1,020 grams of cocaine in an Accra Circuit Court’s exhibit room.
The BNI's terms of reference include coming up with a report on “whether the substance handed over to the court by the Police in September 2011, and which has since been in the custody of the court, is the same substance that was later presented to the Ghana Standards Board for testing. ”
The cocaine exhibit tendered in evidence to the court got swapped with washing soda leading to the discharge of the accused person Nana Ama Martin, who had been standing trial since 2008 for possessing narcotics.
The police and the court are locked in a blame game leading to a petition to the Chief Justice, Georgina Wood, to also look into her stable for possible culprits.
“Government remains committed to the fight against narcotics, noting that any person found to have played a role that infringes on the law in this matter will be severely dealt with in accordance with the law,” a statement issued by the Information Minister John Tia Akologu said.
