Tema and Takoradi ports to be expanded
Government is to embark on major expansion works at the Tema and Takoradi ports to meet the increasing pressure in the wake of Ghana’s oil find.
At the meet the press series in Accra, the Transport Minister, Alhaji Collins Dauda indicated that the expansion works is already underway since the country’s discovery of oil has put considerable pressure on the limited resources at the ports.
According to the Minister, comparable traffic handled for both ports up to September this year and the same period in 2010 showed an increase of 24 per cent over last year’s. Similarly container traffic also showed an increase of 26 per cent over last year.
The maritime industry, according to the Mr Dauda is to be supplied with new maritime aircrafts costing over $10 Million. A contract has also been signed to dredge and reconstruct the canoe basin of the Tema fishing habour at the cost of seven million Ghana cedis.
The Ghana Maritime Security Act is also expected to be amended to cover offshore oil or gas installation beyond the territorial sea. In the railway sector subsector, the Ghana Railway Development Authority has been mandated to develop a Railway Master Plan for the development of railway systems in the country.
The sector is to take delivery of equipment to address the problem of old rolling stock and track infrastructure. The Road Transport Sector is also a key catalyst to consistent development. The focus on this sector has been on road accidents and expansion of road infrastructure.
The Ghana Road Safety Commission has been tasked to intensify its education programmes to reduce the Carnage on our roads. In the Aviation sector, work on the refurbishment and expansion of the domestic terminal for international operations is currently underway.This will also include new parking aprons and taxiway to accommodate bigger aircrafts.
