AMA calls for "all hands on deck" to deal with waste management
Waste management continues to be a great challenge to the country, especially in the big cities. Government and other stakeholders are calling for a filth-free Ghana even as the country prepares for the Christmas festivities.
Statistics provided by the Environmental Protection Agency show that at present, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), which is in charge of waste disposal in Accra, is only able to collect about 55% of solid waste generated within the city.
Although there has been some progress through government’s collaboration with Zoomlion and other waste management companies, public support is being solicited from the AMA to clear the cities of filth ahead of the yuletide season.
Mayor of Accra, Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije says he is impressed with the work of waste management companies in the country in spite of the existing challenges, and therefore, challenged citizens to help keep the environment clean.
He noted that some of the measures being taken by government to prevent the flooding situation which rocked the capital some months back was the restoration of the Odaw and Korle Lagoons.
He, therefore, called on all well meaning Ghanaians to support the initiatives that would deal with the garbage situation in the country.
