Street mechanics gaining roots in Accra

Observations made by e.tv Ghana have revealed that the streets of Ghana’s capital are gradually being turned into auto mechanic shops and washing bays.

Whilst some of the mechanics have also taken over the parking spaces of some streets, it is obvious that traffic flow in areas such as Asylum down, Kanda and Ring Road have been obstructed by these illegal activities.

The practice, which poses a lot of danger to motorists and the general public, have received stern warnings from officials of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA). However, some of the mechanics e.tv Ghana spoke to seemed to have valid and rather revealing reasons why they had settled on the streets to do their work.

One mechanic who gave his name as Kofi Asante explained that due to the unavailability of land he decided to work on the coal tarred street.

Even though the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has persistently warned against the act, some have bluntly refused to adhere to the warnings of the Assembly.

An air condition repairer, Nana Osei, told e.tv Ghana that although the AMA has issued him with warnings to relocate, his failure to do so is due to his inability to rent a place.

On his part, Mayor of Accra, Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije decried the situation and promised to clamp down on perpetrators. He said the new development is forestalling the development agenda of the Assembly.
