New storm drains underway

A sod-cutting ceremony has been held in Osu to begin the construction of a new storm drain in Accra. The new project forms part of measures being instituted by government to deal with the perennial flooding in the capital.

The project is being supported by Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Nii Armah Ashitey.

Mayor of Accra, Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije said the reason for the new drain was after a careful analysis of places which are flood prone. He said after last two year’s floods, the Assembly was able to estimate the amount of money which will be need for the construction of the new storm drains.

The AMA hinted after last two months heavy rains which left parts of the capital flooded that $500 million was needed to construct scientific storm drains in the city to avert the effects of heavy downpours in the future.

As part of the project, roadside drains will be constructed for households to dump waste water. However, a strong warning has been issued against the dumping of rubbish into the storm drainage, to avoid chocking the drains.
