GCAA gets new surveillance aid
As part of plans to modernize the Kotoka International Airport, the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has installed new communication and surveillance equipment.
The infrastructure upgrade is part of efforts by the GCAA to match facilities at the airport with the increasing number of airlines flooding the country.
As the country’s aviation sector flourishes, so is the need for improvements in operations. Safe and efficient global air transport systems have supported economic, social and cultural development of many developed and developing countries.
In the aviation industry, voice communication is very vital in the provision of air traffic services. A controller is tasked with monitoring frequencies, communicating with pilots and ensuring the safety of the flight.
To efficiently perform this function, the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority has installed state-of-the-art communication systems at the airport. They include an automatic dependence surveillance-contract and controller pilot data link communications device, to allow air traffic controllers and pilots, communicate via data instead of voice systems.
The new radar is expected to help engineers communicate across the oceanic parts of the region.
Although the system is still at its trial stage, officials of the GCAA are hopeful they will start full operation in January 2012.
