Market women up in arms with police at Dome market
Tension is brewing at Dome, a suburb of Accra following a dawn demolition exercise carried out by the police at the Dome Market.
The market women are said to be up in arms with the police following the destruction of sheds mounted by the traders along the main road leading to the market.
The market women are demonstrating against the sale of the market by the Market Queen, whose name is currently unknown, to the owner of Heavy Do Chop Bar, a popular food joint along the Dome-St. John’s road.
The traders claim the land was allocated them by the government and therefore, no one had the right to sell the place to the chop bar owner.
Angered by the exercise being carried out by the policemen at the order of the chop bar owners, the market women erected a blockade on the main road trapping commuters plying that route for hours on end.
Reports trickling in indicate that frustrated passengers have, therefore, been forced to step out of their cars and walk the rest of their journey.
Reports indicated that a team of police men who were dispatched to the market to calm tempers were sent away by the women who hurled tomatoes and other food-stuffs at them.
Tempers were further flared when a reinforcement team tried to muscle their way through by tearing down the road block. They were met with stiff resistance from the traders some of whom resorted to exposing their breasts and other parts of their bodies.
