Ghana police to beef up security during Christmas

The Ghana Police Service has initiated a programme dubbed 'Operation Father Christmas' to ensure road accidents are reduced during and after the festive season.

The idea is also to ensure the free flow of traffic in the country. For this reason, the Police Service has deployed five thousand personnel nationwide to ensure that the season is void of any such incidences.

Places where security will be beefed up include the Kwame Nkrumah Circle to Adabraka, Kwame Nkrumah circle to Paloma, Kwame Nkrumah Circle to the Neoplan Station, Kwame Nkrumah Circle to Avenor, and Labone Selsbridge.

The police personnel have been drawn from various divisions to augment the strength of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU).

Usually, the Christmas seasons in Ghana witnesses a lot of vehicular and human activities. While drivers want to cash in on the season, passengers want to reach their destinations early to spend more time with friends and loved ones. This is also the season when road accidents are rampant.

The MTTU of the Ghana Police Service have, therefore, cautioned drivers to ensure their vehicles are in good condition.

Drunk driving has been identified as one of the major causes of road accidents. The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) at the Neoplan station has also introduced the breathalyzer to monitor the alcohol level of drivers before they embark on their journey.

GPRTU officials are, therefore, appealing to the police to intensify their highway patrol operations to stop frequent attacks on their buses.

At the exit of the station, a gaint National Road Safety Billboard display scary statistics of road accidents perhaps to warn drivers.
