AMA finalises plans to relocate Agbogbloshie market
The Accra Metropolitan Assembly is finalizing plans to move the Agbogloshie market to Adjen Kotoku.
The prevailing congestion and insanitary conditions at the market has been a source of worry to city Authorities. Agbogbloshie is a suburb of Accra situated along the banks of the Korle Lagoon, North West of Accra’s Central Business District.
The population of Agbogbloshie consists of economic migrants from rural Ghana, who for the quest of a better life have been compelled a move to urban settings.
Conditions may not be significantly better in the urban areas such as Accra, but making a living is easier.
Often referred to as a digital dumping ground, millions of tones of e-waste are processed each year in Agbogbloshie, presenting a serious health risk to workers.
The area has a vibrant market that serves residents of Accra. But the prevailing environmental and sanitation conditions here has compelled city authorities to relocate the market.
The Public Relations Officer of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Noomo Blaffo told e.tv Ghana news that the decision to relocate the market will only affect traders involved in bulk breaking activities such as onions, tomatoes, yam among others.
He said most often than not their food items arrive in big trucks which end up parking along the streets and causing heavy traffic on the Agbogbloshie Abossey Okai road.
The new market being developed is about 80 per cent complete.
Some traders who spoke to e.tv Ghana news expressed delight in the news of a new market while others complained that relocating them to the new market will cause them to lose customers which will eventually reduce their economic generation.
The fate of the adjourning town nicknamed Soddom and Gomorrah is yet to be determined.
Nuumo Blaffo tells e.tv Ghana news that the squatters will have to find their own way and leave the place.
City authorities hope to develop the entire area into a resort to serve as a potential tourist destination; an ambition which will take several years to be accomplished.
