Water and electricity tariffs go up
The Public Utility and Regulatory Commission (PURC) has announced new tariffs for the last quarter of the year which would take effect from today December 01.
Electricity saw a 3 per cent increase across board whilst water saw a 1.07 per cent increase. The lifeline category which is between 0-50 for electricity in the residential sector, remains free of these new tariffs but residential consumers between the 51-150 customer class have their new tariff pegged at 17. 5 GHp/kWh representing 3. 0 per cent as against 17. 0 GHp/kWh in September.
The same figure of 17. 5 GHp/kWh holds for consumers between the 151 and 300 customer class. For the non-residential customer class between 0-100, their tariff moved from 24. 5 GHp/kWh to 25. 2 GHp/kWh while the highest group, 601+ had their tariff approved at 42. 4 GHp/kWh all representing 3. 0%.
A statement from the utilities regulator announced that the service charge for lifeline consumers is GHc1. 0 per month and GHc1. 6 for other residential consumers as well as GHc2. 7 for non-residential consumers.
For water, the approved end user tariff for the fourth quarter for residential customer class 0-20 is 85. 26 GHp/m3 representing 1. 07% while those who fall under the special commercial class have their approved tariff fixed at 516. 64 GHp/m3 representing 1. 07%.
“As usual, ECG, NEDCO and GWCL are requested to take note that electricity and water consumed in November 2011 but which falls within the December 2011 billing cycle should not be charged at the new rates,” the statement said.
The PURC said in arriving at the decision it took into consideration the fact that there is an increase in the world market price of crude oil and changes in the Ghana Cedi-US dollar exchange rate among others.
