Fraud cases on the decline
Cases of fraud are currently on the decline in the country. Data released by the Criminal Investigation Department of the Ghana Police Service shows that fraud cases declined from 13, 865 last year to 13, 570 cases within the same period in 2011, a decrease of 295 cases.
The police have managed to retrieve a number of items the fraudsters use for their operations.
Seen as a crime and a civil law violation, fraud is an intentional deception made for personal gain or to damage another individual.
The various types of fraud cases reported in Ghana include identity fraud, business scam, gold fraud, and internet fraud referred to as sakawa, black money at wash wash, lottery scam, classified advertisement and national tender scam among others.
Special Units have been created at the Criminal Investigation Department to deal with such fraud cases and the results are beginning to show. 252 persons were arrested in connection with fraud cases between January and September this year. The CID is asking for more public support to intensify this effort.
Mr Prosper Aglor of the Ghana Police CID says, “once you provide information to the police then you should be prepared to assist the police in getting to the bottom of the crime. If you are called upon to make a statement to the police do not think that you are being taken as the suspect. We are equipping our detectives with modern methods of investigating cases and educate them on the new trends of crime in the country.
The Criminal Investigation Department, of the Ghana Police Service is determined to reduce crime in the country and as Christmas approaches they intend to vigorously pursue criminals to ensure a safe society.
