Akyem Abuakwa youth want galamsey legalised
Irate youth of Akyem Abuakwa Traditional area in the Eastern region are calling on government to legalize galamsey operations in the area as this will help government regulate the activities of galamsey operations.
The General-Secretary of the youth group, Daniel Ofori-Atta made this call when countering the allegations leveled before the Okyehene, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin at a news conference in Accra.
Responding to allegations made by Nana Kwame Adjei Boateng, a royal of the Akyem Abuakwa area, that the Okyehene Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin is involved in illicit mining operations, the Okyeman Youth Association noted that the Okyehene, the icon of transformational and visionary leadership in traditional authority and governance could by no means be interested in the petty crumbs from galamsey operations.
Clad in black and red garments to register their utmost displeasure about the allegations, the youth association emphasized that the galamsey issue is a national challenge borne out of many interrelated factors, calling on government to legalize the trade.
He called on politicians to take a cue from the sordid incident of Dagbon, and take practical steps to avert any development that threatens the peace, cohesion and stability of the Akyem Kingdom.
The group further alleged that the rejection of Hon. Samuel Atta-Akyea for the stool as Okyehene has led him to throw his unflinching support to Nana Kwame Adjei Boateng, also a contender for the stool to cause mayhem.
They further called on Hon. Samuel Atta-Akyea to publicly denounce the incident that took place in Kyebi on November 11, 2011 and apologize to the Okyehene and the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council.
