Disabled persons to hit the streets against construction of footbridges
A group of physically challenged persons in Accra are planning a protest to draw attention to the unfriendliness of foot bridges being constructed at various points on the Mallam-Tetteh Quashie stretch of road currently under construction.
But the police say the group cannot go ahead with the protest since their action will not only cause traffic congestion on that stretch of the road but will also cause an embarrassment to the government.
Leading the protest, a largely journalist-based NGO, Promotion of the Rights of Persons with Disability in Africa (PROMOAFRICA), say they are worried that out of the eight bridges built between the Tetteh Quarshie roundabout and Mallam Junction, the physically challenged have not been considered, although they constitute 10% of the Ghanaian population.
For that matter, the group says the demonstration is to bring to the attention of government the manner in which the bridges were being constructed
The President of PROMOAFRICA said in an interview with e.tv Ghana that, “We want the government to rectify the situation by constructing a ramp so that people with disability can also utilize the foot bridge.”
He says the group with all disabled persons in the country will, therefore, on the November 29 converge at Akweteman to demonstrate against the construction.
The police have, however, declined comment on the matter following persistent requests by e.tv Ghana to get some clarification.
