Distribution of Ghana cards in limbo as national service personnel refuse postings

As the distribution of the National Identification Card continues in the Ayawaso Sub-Metro, e.tv Ghana news discovers that the unwillingness of some National Service Personnel to accept postings as operators, supervisors and monitors in the distribution of the Ghana card is creating serious disruptions at the various centres.

The Ghana Card is being introduced as part of government’s efforts to create a national register of its population to help in planning, crime prevention among others. This will in turn facilitate and support the social, economic and political development of the country.

The distribution of the Ghana card has however been greeted with confusion. At some distribution centers in the Ayawaso Sub-metro where the distribution is currently underway, e.tv Ghana news gathered that the inadequacy of NIA personnel has caused delays in the exercise.

The National Identification Authority which is spearheading the exercise blames this on unwillingness on the part of National Service Personnel deployed to these distribution centers to undertake the engagement.

Public Relations Officer of NIA, Bertha Dzeble told e.tv Ghana news that during the orientation period for national service personnel, they were made aware of their responsibility to supervise and distribute the Ghana cards.

However, she continued to say that, most of them failed to turn up on subsequent days because they were expecting to work in an office environment other than doing field work.

When e.tv Ghana news further probed to find out why service personnel had refused to take up their assigned responsibilities, it was gathered that some of them were taking a cue from non-payment of allowances to previous mobile operators of the exercise, a claim the NIA disputes.

The exercise continues tomorrow but it is unclear when the issue of national service personnel would be resolved.
