Government distributes 700 trucks for waste collection
As Part of efforts to rid the country completely of filth, the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development in collaboration with Zoomlion has handed over seven hundred waste collection trucks to the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs).
Commissioning the trucks, the Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, said the delivery of the trucks is expected to boost the logistics needs of waste management companies to help find lasting solution to the nation’s sanitation problems.
The fleet is made up of compaction trucks, skip trucks, cesspit emptiers, bulldozers, trash compactors, road sweepers, three-wheeled mini dump trucks and manual and motorized tricycles.
The distribution of trucks and other machinery is expected to beef up the operational capacities of not only the MMDAs but also other players in the waste and management environmental sanitation industry.
Commissioning the trucks, the Local Government Minister announced that government had secured an eleven million dollar grant from the Exim Bank of India to procure waste management equipment by the end of the year, to further enhance the capacity of the MMDAs.
He also added that government was committed to partnering the private sector to inject more logistical resources into the operations through the expansion of its fleets of trucks and machinery in order to beef up the operational capacities of the MMDAs and the players in the sector.
The mayor of Accra Alfred Vanderpuye says the logistics can’t be effectively utilized if residents do not corporate in the house to house waste collection registration exercise.
Zoomlion which is leading the initiative says the company is on course and will continue to work hand in hand with the ministry of local government to fight all sanitation challenges in the country.
