Pwalugu hydro-electric dam to provide electricity to Ghana's savannah regions
The Savannah Accelerated Development Authority (SADA) is collaborating with the Volta River Authority to generate hydro-power to the northern half of the country through investment in the Pwalugu hydro-electric dam.
With a projected investment of Three Hundred and Fifty Million Dollars, the Pwalugu project will produce electricity for an agro-industrial hub in that part of the country. This is part of measures to bridge the development gap between the North South.
(SADA) was established to bring about accelerated economic growth and social development to the Northern Ecological Zone.
The Northern Savannah comprises five of the ten regions of Ghana extending from the three northern regions to the northern parts of Brong Ahafo and Volta region. These areas represent half of the total land mass and a third of the country’s population.
The area produces more than sixty percent of the country’s staple foods. Years of underdevelopment as a result of abysmal ineffective policies over the years has confined the savannah belt to the grip of poverty.
Article 36(2) (d) of the 1992 constitution mandates government in the direct principle of state policy to take prudent measures to ensure sound and even development in all parts of the county.
But vast disparities in development continue to exist between the north and the southern part of Ghana.
At the National Government and Development Partners Conference on the Savannah Accelerated Development Programme, experts deliberated on keys issues to enhance the activities of SADA as a catalyst to development in Northern Ghana.
In the 2010 budget statement, government allocated thirty million Ghana cedis to SADA and has allocated the same amount to the authority in the 2012 budget.
The Chief Executive Officer of SADA, Alhaji Gilbert Iddi, however says more funding is needed to implement their activities.
Development partners have also pledged their support to help improve the poverty situation in northern Ghana.
It is expected that the implementation of the policies of SADA will reverse the current state of the northern savannah ecological zone.
