Kotoka International Airport to be given facelift in 2012
Government is to give Kotoka International Airport a facelift in 2012. According to the Minister of Finance, Dr. Kwabena Duffour, this will create further opportunities for the expansion of flights in and out of Accra and seal Ghana’s status as the "Gateway to West Africa".
The expansion comes in the wake of calls for an upgrade since the usage of Ghana’s only international airport is increasing. Over the past two years, air traffic in and out of Accra has increased by 50%.
Recently the airport has added three new boarding gates and has undergone expansion work on the runway. However, the phenomenal rate of growth has forced further expansion of the airport's facilities to keep it internationally competitive.
For this reason, government in its budget statement announced its aims to undertake expansion works on the airport in 2012.
Delivering the 2012 budget statement in Parliament yesterday, the Finance Minister reiterated government’s commitment to ensuring that Ghana’s status as a West African Gateway is enhanced by the provision of new facilities at the Kotoka International Airport and the refurbishment of existing ones.
Among other things, government has managed to commence the phase 3 rehabilitation of the airport and a new bay to accommodate wide boarding aircraft.
The airport has in the past few years increased passenger traffic by over 50% with the introduction of several new airlines and the provision of a friendlier environment. The airport is strategic to Ghana’s development and its expansion is welcome news in the nation’s quest to open its doors to outside investments.
The provision or the reintroduction of Ghana International Airlines was however not on the cards. Thus Ghana’s ailing airline industry seems to remain in the doldrums without any bailout from government.
